North Head Course Description

Prepared and measured by Stephen Jackson

Map here Google map here

Overview

The flattest and fastest of the Striders courses, the course starts and finishes on North Head Scenic Drive just in from Darley Road past Manly Hospital, south of Manly. It consists of a short out and back to the Old Quarantine Station roundabout, and then twice all the way out to North Head and back. Numerous speed humps dot the course, but a good bitumen surface makes it a good course for a PB - and if a PB is out of the question, then the views out near North Head are spectacular. All kilometres are marked, and the distance is certified.
NOTE: The registration area for North Head has moved this year - it is NO LONGER on the road near the stone arch, but in the grassed area nearby
NOTE2: Please keep noise to a minimum before the race - the registration area is very close to some houses
NOTE3: There is NO PARKING in the hospital carpark (the "trial" from last race has NOT been continued).

Course Description

NOTE: the course is open to cars and bikes, so please be careful!

Approaching North Head Scenic Drive from Darley Road, there is a stone arch that the road passes through. The start line, finish line, and turn point for each lap is located 125m past that stone arch. From the start line, the run heads south along Nth Head Scenic Drive for its first short out and back section. The roundabout at the entrance to the Old Quarantine Station is the turn point for the first lap. Running around the roundabout back towards the start, the 1km comes up 300m after the roundabout just after the St Barnabas Ave.

Back to the start line for the first U turn of the run. Head back out past the roundabout on the first of 2 long laps. The 2km mark is reached 90m before the roundabout. The run bears left past the roundabout and continues out towards the loop at North Head. This stretch is long and infested with speed humps. The 3km mark comes up on the right hand side of the course just opposite the rangers house at North Fort Rd.

Further along the road splits and the traffic flow takes the left hand fork. So does the run. Following the road right around the loop in a clockwise direction, the run returns to the North Head Scenic Drive and heads back to the start/turn/finish. The 4km is passed at the second car park on the left before reaching North Fort Rd. 5km is at the roundabout.

Back for the second U-turn at the start line, the 6km comes up 300m after the turn, just after the driveway off to the left into the army camp. Continue along the road, past the roundabout, the 7km is just after the blind corner at the end of the long straight 300m before the 3km mark.

Around the loop again, the 8km mark is passed about 100m before rejoining North Head Scenic Drive. Back to the start/turn/finish line. 9km is along the long straight, halfway between the 7k and 5k marks - approximately 300m from both. The finish line is back at the start line.
