Sydney Striders Juniors

Do you just love running?

  • Do you enjoy school cross country, primary school challenges, or maybe the 800m and 1500m at Little Athletics?
  • Are you looking for a bit of healthy fun this winter running as part of a friendly and well organised running club in events all over NSW?
  • Are you reliable and enthusiastic (you don’t have to be brilliant!)?
Then maybe Sydney Striders Juniors is for you. ...

The Sydney Striders Juniors section began in 2007.  At present the junior members can't participate in any of the Striders organised events, but can join the club and run at ANSW races, as long as they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.

We started small with 5 members the first year, growing to 11 in 2008. These were all in the U14 and U12 categories. Both years we have won state bronze medals in various events, and despite being small in numbers, we were 4th overall juniors club for the season last year. But remember, you don't have to be really fast - it's having a reliable team that counts.

There are 6 races in the ANSW winter season, a mix of races and relays on the road and true cross country. The distances range from 1.5K to 4K depending on the race and your age-group. Age-groups go up in 2 year chunks, with the youngest being the under 12s.

A note - you are considered to be whatever age you turn in  2009. So, for example, if your 12th birthday is on December 31st 2009, you still have to run in the under 14s. Those are the rules!

Have a look at the ANSW website http://www.nswathletics.org.au. When they finalise the dates, they post a winter handbook on the homepage of their website - this is your bible! You could contact them for detailed information on how age groups and teams work etc., if you want to go straight to the horse's mouth. Their phone no. is (02) 9746 1122, and Simon Matthews is competitions manager.

Make it a family affair. Why not join the Striders as a family? Then parents can run either in Open, 35+ or 45+ categories, and maybe pick up a state medal too. Here you can see Caroline doing just that!
To join, or just to find out more, contact Caroline Yarnell at . She will give you all the details and email / post forms, as at the moment we do not have online juniors registration available.
