The Concept

The Club has always recognized individuals for their achievements in specific areas. However, there is always the argument over which is better - number of events contested, number of high placing, difficulty of individual events etc. While those arguments can never really be resolved, Kevin O'Kane, one of a handful of honorary life members, proposed the "Super Series" to look at achievements in diverse events throughout the year. The Super Series concept aims to recognize and reward the consistent performers for their efforts, versatility, and general support of the club.

The Super Series changes for 2012 include:

  • Points are earned for race results, entering as a part of a Striders team, race length bonus, and a size of race bonus.
  • Note that to win ANY award you must volunteer for the club during the year.
  • Use of nett (chip) times when available
  • alternate races where field sizes are limited
  • The Events... there are 12 specific events (or alternatives) in this year's Super Series. Best 8 results to count. Note: Where multiple distances are available (e.g. half or full marathon in Canberra or Gold Coast) then results are normalised and combined.
  • The Distance Bonus... will reward the effort associated with running the longer events - the longer the event the bigger the Distance Bonus. This emphasises that the Striders is a distance running club, and anyway, there is always the 10k Series for the speedsters! Think carefully as to what events get dropped in your calendar.
  • Age Groupings...Open Men and Women (which is everyone), then age groups from M35 and W35 in 5 year grouping. The Age and Gender competition is a single category with the handicapping system making allowances for age, sex, and distance.
  • Points...are gained for running Super Series events but you must volunteer officially for the club during the year to get any points. There is the distance bonus, race size (Striders finishing),and team bonus.
  • Placing Points...Across open categories the points will be 1st 100 points, 2nd 96 points, 3rd 93 points, 4th 91 points, 5th 90 points, and then down by 1 to a minimum of 2 points.
  • Important... All entries to events must be in your name and must comply with the organisers' conditions.
  • Equally important... Any decisions relating to points, rules, conditions, or anything else are at the total discretion of the Super Series Director. All arguments listened to, but usually ignored.

    The Rules

    1. Only Financial Striders at the time of each event will earn points.
    2. Open, Age, Male, Female, and Age Gender Adjusted points will be allocated separately.
    3. 100 points for the first Sydney Strider home in each category, 96 for 2nd, 93 for 3rd, 91 for 4th, with a reduction of 1 point for each place thereafter with a minimum of 2 points scored.
    4. The Distance Bonus: as listed in the table.
    5. The results of events with alternatives and/or multiple distances will be equalised by using the distance component of the Age and Gender Adjusted tables, then combined, and points awarded accordingly. Note: the Distance bonus definitely applies.
    6. Results will be collated after the event. Best efforts to get all Striders results will be made, but to ensure inclusion, members should advise their times to the Super Series Co-ordinator (email below).
    7. Race size relates to the number of Striders listed in the results as finishing after combining all races in a given set. Less than 75 has no bonus, 75-150 gets 3 points, and 150+ gets 6 points.
    8. In the event of a tie at the end of the series, a countback based on number of scoring events, then dropping 1 score, then dropping no scores, then highest placed finishes to separate the runners.
