Striders Kill Palm Beach to Manly - by John Turner

Daylight was second to this year's first woman, Joanne Cowan (1:55:03 - a two minute PB!), nearly 15 minutes ahead of the next lady. Jo was 14th overall and won the Female 40-49 trophy for good measure. And Strider John Young (1:45:25), outright race winner, was a mere four minutes outside Greg Welch's course record, set eight years ago. Close behind John came our famous duelling duo, Chris Truscott (1:50) and Darren Benson (1:51), in fifth and seventh places overall.

Striders figured in all but one of the other age group wins too. Congratulations to Penny Smith (1st F50-59), Ray Potter (1st M50-59), and Bruce Murray (1st M60+).

There is some doubt as to whether the race will be held again. This is a matter of concern to our dedicated January competitors, but of supreme indifference to those of us who believe 5am starts are unconstitutional. The reason for its possible demise is not because Striders always win, nor is it because of the proven mental infirmity of all competitors (5am start indeed!), but because the police are unhappy about it, for God's sake. Can you believe that? Here is a coastal run, no intersecting roads, very competently organised, all finished before most people are even out of bed on a Saturday morning, last 2K totally off-road, and they want to close it down. Yeah, right up there with the risk of being seen to do the Macarena! Talk about a Police State.
