Joel's Sydney bush runs

This is a new section detailing bush runs in the Sydney area. Points to note:

These are runs that are largely, but often not entirely, in the bush. The routes contain mixtures of road (as little as humanly possible), firetrail, singletrack and occasionally scrambling or bush bashing (will be noted).

There are generally few amenities (water stops/shops/toilets) on these courses, compared to normal STaRs, but they are generally much more interesting. ;-)

A conservation organization calledSTEPhas published several excellent topographic maps (1:10,000 scale) that cover Garigal National Park, the lower North Shore and Lane Cove National Park. They have annotated them very carefully with pretty much all of the trails that exist in these regions (much better than the standard topo maps of the areas). I have used the first of these to piece together some of my runs, and they are a great resource if you are trying to decide where you could run or walk in the bush in these areas.

Remember that the times that you might expect to take for these runs will be longer than runs of the corresponding distance on the road (maybe your time will be as much as 30-40% longer, depending on navigation and roughness of the track) .
